This is actually an 18-plane trans-Pac from San Diego to Pearl Harbor on 1938-Jan-18. VP-9 had six PBY-1s (BuNos 0137-0142) and VP-10 had twelve PBY-2s. Note the notched elevators on the PBY-1s. I can't see top-side carburetor air-intakes (PBY-3) on any of these planes. That's not a ship near the horizon, but a large flaw in the photo.
